Creative Soft Circuits is a web collection of hands-on introductory workshops focused on creative engagement with electronics, which shows how the current opening of the wearables and e-textiles field would allow non-technical audiences to approach fundamental concepts of design, circuitry and programming, through practices where design and the development of artistic creativity are fostered.
Creative Soft Circuits is a project led by Paola Guimerans who has taught teaching and designed these collaborative workshops in Spain from 2011 to 2017. This workshops collection aims to highlight new opportunities in education for building a bridge between the Arts and STEM (*) (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics). Thus, emerging cultural practices of digital literacy linked to the wearables and e-textiles that provides new educational options for the inclusion of minority audiences – such as women and girls – who otherwise would have not get attracted to STEM fields.
(*) STEAM is the acronym in English that refers to the disciplines of science, technology, engineering, art, and mathematics, considered essential to be trained in today’s society. Although in the 90s the focus of these scientific and technological areas focused on STEM, nowadays the trend has changed and it is valued to incorporate art to generate innovation and creativity in processes.
